Monday 19 December 2016

Week ending 16/12/16

Client on site visit today so apologies for the delay in publishing this. By contrast no client visits at all last week and no more planned for this week.
Definitely getting quieter though a little too quiet on one client front re a Jan 2017 go live on Nav  2016. No doubt emails will flow later this week.
Work completed last week included put away report development changes [Nav 2009 RTC], creating MISSING permission set to accommodate missing permissions (specifically My Customer access on Nav 2013R2) and various changes to accounts schedules [Nav 2013R2]. No major plans for this week so expecting a much quieter week.
That's all folks.

Monday 12 December 2016

Week ending 9/12/16

Another week goes by. Only 2 client visits last week and now only 1 this week. Must be getting close to Xmas.
Work completed last week: 2 client visits providing on site support including accounts schedules and column layout creations against requirement [Nav 2013r2] and change of configuration as a result of new chart of accounts [Nav 2016] - changes included amendment to various posting  matrix. Set of Nav 2009 RTC developments approved so we started this last week and delivered 2/3rds to the client for testing. The remaining 1/3rd will be completed this week. Also assisted in posting general journals for a client remotely re a finalising Nav to statutory accounts.
Felt busier than it looks above.
This week only 1 client visit but a lot of work to complete re developments (as noted above), changes to email smtp sending in Nav 2013, Nav 2016 implementation support (completed the training for the January 2017 go live a month ago) re set up data and SEPA export testing and other bits and bobs.

Monday 5 December 2016

Week ending 2/12/16

Much quieter week last week on on site client visit front.
Came across a really useful Excel function when getting data from another legacy application in Excel format to Dynamics Nav via Rapidstart. CLEAN removes all invisible printing / formatting from an Excel cell including carriage return line feeds. Saves the day that one.
Work completed this week included:
Completed data migration for extended texts from legacy application to Dynamics Nav 2016 via Rapidstart. See note above re Excel CLEAN function.
Completed US sales tax pages for a client to report on sales pre sale tax and actual sales tax collected by month from the start of trading. [Nav 2013r2].
Development quote for 4 days [Nav 2009 RTC] approved by a client so we will start by requesting relevant object exports from the client and then start.
This week's plans include 2 client visits (both on site support - 1 for Nav 2013r2 and the other Nav 2016) and getting on with 4 day PO sign off re developments.
That's it for this week folks. Xmas is getting closer. :)

Tuesday 29 November 2016

Week ending 25/11/16

Well last week was a week for on site client visits with yesterday being another and hence the delay in the blog publication.
Last week's client visits started with on site creation of management accounts following the departure of the Financial Controller (thought I had left this behind but you never lose the skills) followed by 2 days Nav 2016 training in Birmingham for 10 end users (mix of UK and European) covering financial management and finally last Thursday my regular visit to Kings Cross in London to assist in pulling together the list of developments / bugs in Nav 2013r2 and other related applications. And then yesterday I was at a client site locally (always nice to be local) to aid in the new Financial Controller induction specifically on Dynamics Nav 2013r2. So basically a training day.
So it has been a busy few days.
Plans for this week include less on site client visits (only 1 more this week after yesterday), a few conference calls, a few Teamviewer sessions and some chargeable work. Been a busy week for first line support this week so dealing with those issues today.
And I have accepted a month before Xmas that I ought to start planning for it personally. So all family Xmas presents bought yesterday (on line of course) and work Xmas do booked for next week.
So it is all good!
That's all for this week's blog. Have a great week.

Monday 21 November 2016

Week ending 18/11/16

A full week of work last week but much effort spent on getting supporting training material ready for Nav 2016 training this week.
Developments completed included a SPREAD development for Nav 2013r2 (obviously not needed for Nav 2016/17 given deferral functionality) and fixed bug in VAT Day Book Entry report [Nav 2013r2]. Developed a fix for GB database for 4,4,5 reporting for client and demo'd. [Nav 2013r2].
Made some more changes to initial Nav 2016 configuration following client requests. Go live January 2017.
Another Nav 2016 implementation moving on at a pace as well. Developed Nav 2016 pages for client that they currently use for production planning. To demo as yet.
So this week is client site visit week. Today providing accounting support, tomorrow and Wednesday Nav 2016 training in Birmingham and Thursday on site support for Nav 2013r2.
Hence the short blog update.

Monday 14 November 2016

Week ending 11/11/16

As Christmas gets ever closer...but it is not even December yet!!
Another week passes by at FPC.
The week started off with accounting and HR work. Completed a VAT rec for a client's auditors (tracked sales value to output goods, not as easy as it should have been) and an interview for a new FC. Then more Dynamics Nav related work completed on one of a few Nav 2016 implementations we are assisting on. Nav 2016 configuration changed and tested for changes to chart of accounts, dimensions and VAT rates (initial configuration for a test / training company includes a number of countries different VAT rates). Configuration delivered to remote database as a test company for the client staff to test. Client due to deliver training programme for next week by the end of this week. We also set up users on remote database - for Nav 2016 don't forget to start user setup with 'Add me as administrator' otherwise you cannot log back in. Took us a while to recover from this but we did.
Plans for this week: only 1 on site attendance to continue with process mapping and moving onto Dynamics Nav related support. Need to complete some more accounting related work for a client re support required for recent departure of an FC (attending site next week for management accounts work), develop US sales tax report by month by client (actual tax and goods values so 2 reports) and plan Nav 2016 training once requirements confirmed by client.
That's all folks.

Monday 7 November 2016

Week ending 4/11/16

So what were we up to last week.
1 of the BACS developments completed last week completely changed from xml to fixed length by field text file. Never mind, onwards and upwards.
Added fixed text to labels for manufacturing.
Attended client site for Nav 2016 implementation. Fixed a visual basic maco issue re importing csv files Access database (so not Nav 2016) and created a brief project plan to confirm a go live date. Key milestone is final chart of accounts.
Providing recruitment expertise for a client so sifting CVs and completing initial interviews.
Completed first level configuration for a Nav 2016 DE implementation and tested and all working. Now client has changed chart of accounts so need to complete the changes and test again
Attended site to complete data feeds mapping between applications.
Plans for this week include more CV reviews and interviewing for 1 client, review of Nav 2016 DE implementation plan against what has been completed to date and check go live and complete more Nav 2016 DE configuration work.
Also looks like we will providing some expertise for another client's Nav 2016 GB implementation in the new year.
That's all for this week folks.

Monday 31 October 2016

Week ending 28/10/16

What a busy week last week!
Developments completed included:
2 different BACS export developments for UK banks (one day I assume they will have 1 standard that Nav will support out of the box) - one a report the other an xml. [Nav 2013R2].
New utility to create service contract lines from a (contract) sales order. [Nav 2013r2].

Also attended site to provide assistance during staff changes for a client (back to being an accountant while recruitment takes place) and start mapping data feeds between applications.
Interesting fact this week re Dynamics Nav (2013r2 but may apply to any version) - you cannot use accounts schedules to report on periods (say 4,4,5) on GB version as GB version has own country specific periods table (10560) and some crucial fields (one from table 334 but there may be others) and code missing from GB version. Suggesting a work around for our client which means delving into W1 version of database and collecting missing field and relevant codeunits / pages.
This week we are attending site for 2 days (ongoing process / data feeds mapping and continuation of Nav 2016 implementation (may look at using Nav 2017 instead given stage implementation is at), completing another BACS export, starting another Nav 2016 implementation with a base configuration now we the proposed chart of accounts) and complete a development for more labelling for stock for printing off on a label printer). Also review CVs for a client, complete some interviews, provide on site support as required as well as fill in data gaps from previous member of staff leaving. So another busy week.
That's all for this week folks.

Monday 24 October 2016

Week ending 21/10/16

Attended a local Dynamics Nav 2017 / Dynamics 365 conference this week so I have now seen what these products offer over Nav 2016 and their differences / launch dates. More details on this web page.
Anyway back to what we have been doing work wise last week.
Developments completed included:
Add 'on the fly' fields on warehouse put away lines page to show whether bin codes default and fixed. Restrict user permission to Register put aways through user set up table.
[Nav 2009 RTC].
Configuration changes included:
Set up licences as stock items as requested by client and created example sales orders with a mix of physical stock (no unit price) and licence stock. Will add serial numbers to licence stock at a later date. [Nav 2013r2].
Requirement changes investigated:
Creating service contracts from a contract sales order - not dates but sales order lines specifics. [Nav 2013r2]
Other changes completed:
Step by step instructions on using Special Orders functionality on sales orders. [Nav 2013r2].
Support issues resolved last week:
Queries on Consolidation process [Nav 2013r2].
Other work completed included creating a local Nav 2016 database ready to start the configuration this week with a view to deliver a test company to the client's remote database by 4/11/16 after they have confirmed (this week) the chart of accounts and requirements for the base configuration. [Nav 2016].
This week we are completing more BACS export report developments for 2 clients [Nav 2013r2] and starting the initial configuration for a client ready for updating completing when we have received the chart of accounts required. Other plans this week include 2 client site visits for ad hoc on site support [Nav 2013r2] and data mapping between applications. [Nav 2013r2].
That's it for this week.

Monday 17 October 2016

Week ending 14/10/16

Another day another dollar!
Completed a bespoke (minor amendment) sales order process with back to back orders successfully and as a result discussed further enhancements and extend the use of stock for non stock items. Working on more examples this week for the client to test further. [Nav 2013r2]
Completed 1st level mapped process flows for a client's business and agreed next steps which will be delving into the detail of back office finance and interaction between applications. Suggested the client needs a systems champion to manage the complex relationships and data feeds between applications and specifically manage changes to each application in terms of impact on other applications and effort / priority etc. [Nav 2013r2]
Confirmed options for GridLayout in Nav 2016 pages. Created a new facy box for sales orders as requested by the client. [Nav 2016].
Chasing progress re new Nav 2016 install so that once done we can start the configuration work.
Received an enquiry re web services and the use for feeding data (actually allowing EPOS software to collect data from set ftp location) re stock quantities. Confirmed process and requested confirmation from EPOS supplier that process will work for them. Once confirmed we will provide a quote.
So on paper a quieter week but last week approved quotes totalled 5.5 days which we will start this week. Subject to delivery for 2 quotes of full SQL backups (2) for us to restore to a local database and then complete the developments. So on paper a busy week. And then we need to set up some more example sales orders (back to back PO work earlier on this blog) this week.
That's all folks.

Monday 10 October 2016

Week ending 7/10/16

So what have we been up to in the last week?
Well......
Completed the last elements of the step by step processes for Nav 2016 finance modules for a client.
Completed investigation for best back to back SO to PO functionality in Nav 2013r2 that fits the needs of the client. Going for Special Orders as the client will not always invoice a sales order so Drop Shipment not possible. There is also a physical shipping / receipting of goods from the client premises. Also completed the proposed process flow for different types of sales orders. Created a new field on sales header table (and related posted tables) and more cues data to track new sales order types. Added email PDF functionality for POs.
Fixed Send-It addon issues on Nav reports [Nav app v2009, database v4] to allow all users to run reports where Send-It add not installed.
Mapped more business end processes for a client. Next week focusing on the Finance department end to end processes.
Changed year end for more than 12 months for a client (configuration change) and hard coded start date for each year for a bespoke 3 year sales report.
So basically a really busy week.
Oh and forgot to confirm Nav 2016 implementation quote approved so this project starts this week.
This week we have 2 client visits (demo back to back ordering and new sales order type functionality, mapping Finance processes), a quote for a BACS extract to submit and investigate issues with some bespoke functionality for Nav 2013 that needs to be fixed pre 2016 implementation. Oh and start the Nav 2016 implementation after our business partner has installed the Nav 2016 application. Our work is base configuration.
That's all folks.

Monday 3 October 2016

Week ending 30/9/16

A week for postponement of client visits. 1 postponed last week to this and then postponed from this week. Another postponed for this week. So what was 3 client visits this week is one and I only attended client site once last week.
Other work started / completed:
Nav 2016 step by step process based instructions to client requirements quoted for and approved. Started last week and will finish today / tomorrow.
Nav 2016 implementation project approved last week with a kick off meeting this week.
Report amended for new fields for client. Extension of previous development work completed.
Resolved query re resource EUR pricing for a sales order.
That is for last week. Quieter than usual but still keeping busy. Quite a few Nav 2016 implementations on the go and all progressing but at their own pace as per client requirements.
That's all for now folks.

Monday 26 September 2016

Week ending 25/9/16

So who noticed the lack of a blog last week? Just me then.
Last week was a week for client visits.1 day on site providing ad hoc support [Nav 2013r2], 1 day continuing with mapping high level end to end business process flows with a view to mapping this flows in detail and then matching to various applications and data flows [Nav 2013r2] and a day on site training for new member of staff [Nav 2016].
In addition completed the following developments: added correspondence address to posted sales invoice report and migrated bespoke code from Nav 2013 to Nav 2016 (yes still required).
Also mapped proposed process flow for different types of sales orders for a service management business and issued for comment and amendment. [Nav2013r2].
So this week chasing up news re approval of quotes sent over the last 2 weeks as well as 2 more on site visits (continuing process mapping, training on Nav 2016).
That's all for this week folks.

Monday 12 September 2016

Week ending 9/9/16

A lot of pre sales this week so not much chargeable.
Attended site to demo Nav 2016 as well as run provide super user training including Jet install and demo.
Pre sales work included run through requirements for Nav 2016 new implementation and then quote for and an initial meeting in London as to whether we can help with a Nav 2015 stalled implementation. Suggested a different approach and a workshop to get a faster fix in place to negate the need for Excel.
Also received a few enquiries re Nav help including transfer of MS Partner. We are not a Nav partner (too small) but we work with 2 partners so we try and help where we can. Will need to see what this leads to.
Plans for this week include:
Another pre sales meeting today at client site to try and firm up on what they need from Nav 2016 and amend supplied quotes as required.
Attend client site to revise chart of accounts in configuration [Nav 2016] to agreed layout and amend all set up tables. Then start testing transactions.
Attend client site to complete notes from 2 weeks ago and follow up queries. At the moment focusing on high level data flows as these are complex, involve a number of different applications including Nav 2013r2 and look that they have led to fire fighting in the finance department. So this week will be confirming the gaps in my knowledge from the single visit and finish off my notes from 2 weeks ago.
Also pulling together quotes for an existing client re developments required and if approved we will get on with next week.
That's it for this week folks.

Sunday 4 September 2016

Week ending 2/9/16

Another week goes by. Last week was a busy one again which is always good for the self employed.
Completed the following work:
Minor changes to report and codeunit following a client's upgrade from Nav 2013 to Nav 2016.
Step by step process based instructions on how to use Nav consolidation. Completed item configuration for a test company. Configured and tested sales prepayment functionality. [Nav 2013r2].
New fields added to allow for ship to emails and phone numbers for initial sales order creation and therefore all related posted table headers. Also amended delivery report for same change. [Nav 2009 app, v4 database]. Amended pick report to allow new labelling for delivery tracking. [Nav 2009 app, v4 database].
Attended new client site to discuss current Dynamics Nav configuration and current system data flows including Dynamics Nav. [Nav2013r2].
Plans for this week include 2 days on site training for Jet reports on Nav 2016 covering an element of super user training, a meet to discuss the start of Nav 2016 implementation and a meeting in London to discuss whether we can help with some bespoke developments (potential new customer).
That's all for this week folks.

Monday 29 August 2016

Week ending 26/8/16

I was on my holidays last week so not a great deal to report but I can list what is happening this week. New client site visit in London this week re Nav review [Nav 2013] - the first of a few on site meetings to complete some analysis on current Nav use etc and report back.
I was meeting up with a potential new client tomorrow in London but no details of the meeting place received so meeting must be off.
Conference call on Friday as a follow up to a quote for Nav 2016 implementation delivered March 2016 which I think the client now wants to start. Will find out Friday.
Next week I am at another new client site (2nd visit) in the South providing super user training including Jet Express tuition [Nav 2016] for 2 days. I will have a follow up Nav 2013 use review meeting next week as well though not yet confirmed these dates.
Also being chased by some existing clients for some on site visits. So all good for a small business.
Last week received 2 enquiries for on site training from London and Malta. Responded last week so will have to wait and see if anything happens.
So all go over the next few weeks. Also need to chase up 2 pieces of development work completed but not delivered as minor queries raised. [Nav v4, Nav 2009 Classic].
That's it for this week folks.

Friday 19 August 2016

Week ending 19/8/16

An early blog this week as out all of next week.
Quieter week but we still managed to complete the following:
On site support visit to review and amend initial configuration [Nav 2016]. As a result of this visit booked for 2 more on site days (in September) for Jet Reports training.
Also completed a conference call for a review of Nav use for a client [Nav2013r2]. Agreed approach and confirmed first date for on site attendance in September.
Finished testing consolidation configuration for client and delivered results for first 7 months on the year for review. [Nav 2013r2].
Added a new item field for alternative shelf numbers. [Nav v2009 app, v4 database].
That's it. As I say a quiet week but September already looking busy with new and existing clients. So all good!

That's all folks!

Monday 8 August 2016

Week ending 5/8/16

Well it started off a quiet week but....
Work completed this week included a (brief) on site client visit [Nav 2013r2], change to production reports to use shelf number not bin code [Nav app v2009, database v4], data migration to assign new default shelf number to item numbers [Nav app v2009, database v4], development completed to assign new shelf number when relevant item created and change to disallow editing tick box for new rules [Nav app v2009, database v4]. Also continued with pdf and email development for 4 documents [v4] (all tested and working bar one which we will fix and test this week), finished production report detailing weekly due date slots for production orders [Nav app v2009, database v4], started consolidation work for a client (again will be completed this week) [Nav2013r2] and started USA sales tax report [Nav 2013r2].
Still waiting for answer to queries raised with client re 2 new fields on customer card and legacy data feeds that populate the fields. I am sure we will get a response when holiday season ends.

That's all for this week folks.

Monday 1 August 2016

Week ending 29/7/16

Definitely holiday season re answers to queries to clients. Slight delays in responses so some work completion delayed as a result.
Completed and delivered as planned for last week the following developments:
Cheque remittance report [Nav 2009 RTC], final testing with client re Spindle and cc email changes [Nav 2013r2] and US sales tax report for client. [Nav2013r2].
No response yet re 2 new customer fields and pdf and emailing so hopefully this will be resolved this week.
Telephone interview went well, client requirements discussed and agreed date for next discussion. So fingers crossed. Client requirement for 2 days a week on site for Nav 2013r2 review help and assistance.
Developments approved last week and completed included item last date modified field update from a unit cost change [Nav2009 RTC], BACS report for Lloyds bank [Nav 2013r2] and Invoice Post Email and Print menu option off sales order US database [Nav2013r2].
Started user permissions and role assignment for client as all users (UK and US) super users [Nav 2013r2]. Client visit this week to discuss this and other work for the next month and agree a plan of action and timescales.
Completed new company creation for client. [Nav 2009 Classic].
Plans for this week include complete development for pdf documents [Nav v4], complete 2 new customer table fields and legacy app data migration [Nav 2009 Classic] and finish production planning reports [Nav 2009 app v4 database]. Also attending client site tomorrow to provide on site support and assistance [Nav2013r2]. These all assume response to queries raised with client. It being holiday season!
That's all for this week folks.

Monday 25 July 2016

Week ending 22/7/16

No client visits last week so spent the whole week in the office which mad a change.
Developments completed last week included 2 new customer fields populated by a legacy data feed. One query raised which will be confirmed this week so we can deliver for user acceptance testing.

Pdf and emailing better solution [v4 sp3] completed for 1 of 4 documents. Query raised for other 3 documents and awaiting client response. Will get this completed and delivered this week.
Changes made to cheque remittance report [2009 Classic] - this was started from scratch to get the cheque numbering to work (demo report did not miss cheque numbers where the remittance details exceeded 1 page). Final testing this week and then deliver to client.
So a week for starting developments but not completing. A lot of developments last week took a lot longer than thought to complete. One of those weeks.
Developed a Invoice Post, Email and Print page action off sales orders and delivered to client. [Nav2013r2].
Started auto last modified date change from unit cost changes. This will be complete this week.
Configuration work completed last week included starting permission set assignment to user ids for a client (all users UK and US super users) [Nav 2013r2].
So plans for this week are:
No client visits again this week. It is holiday season!
Complete and deliver the following developments when clients have confirmed answers to queries:
cheque remittance report, 2 new customer fields and pdf and emailing.
Complete final testing with client re Spindle and cc email changes as requested.
Complete US sales tax report for client. [Nav2013r2].
Start / complete any approved POs this week. [Nav2013r2].
Potential project telephone interview Tuesday afternoon.
So that's all for now folks.

Monday 18 July 2016

Week ending 15/7/16

Completed last week:
On site support for management accounts (last hand over) and a meeting to confirm next stages. As a result, a number of quotes submitted for approval last Friday so waiting to here. [Nav 2013r2]
Fixed issue with account schedule not showing Preview data - down to column layout having no configuration data. [Nav v5 DE].
Started Spindle changes for 4 document reports for including cc email address. Slight issue with Spindle (not Nav) configuration but resolved. Just need to test when client free this week. [Nav 2013r2].
Fixed sales invoice email issue re email body text. [Nav 2013r2].
Attended client site to install new label printer (not network). Could not get to work (label printer printed labels not down the label but landscape) but with a few tweaks of another networked label printer re its font managed to get this working on network for multiple users off released production orders. [Nav 2009 Classic app, v4 database]. Following site visit 2 new production planing reports requested which we will work on this week and next.
Provided support re month end queries [Dynamics Nav 2013r2].
Started the better solution for pdf and emailing documents off v4 sp3 Nav. Not as easy as Nav 2013 as no pdf creator built in. Performance issues corrupting data so needed to find a better solution that could easily be migrated (in whole or part) to Nav 2016.
Completed a number of other quotes for a mix of current clients. Some rejected (actual volume of data for a report very small so no need for development) and some waiting to here whether approved or not. One quote was to track changes to unit cost so that any change made would trip last modified date. Found a really need solution. [Nav 2009 RTC].
Developments to be completed this week:
Adding 2 new bespoke fields to customer table and changing dataport feed into Dynamics Nav to take new data to new fields. [Nav 2009 Classic].
Finish and deliver pdf and emailing documents development. Book on site visit to test on site.
Make changes to cheque remittance report as requested. [Nav 2009 RTC].

All quiet on Dynamics Nav 2016 implementation - we are the developers not the project managers and are waiting feedback from end user testing but assume as a retail business they are busy selling!
So in short very busy especially for this time of year!

Monday 11 July 2016

Weeks ending 8/7/16

Work completed in the last few weeks included:
On site training on look and feel and specifically on accounts schedules and column layouts. [Nav 2013r2].
Amended remittance advice report (pre post) for additional columns and totals. Nav 2009 RTC but used Classic sections instead and deleted layout as sections more flexible in Nav 2009.
Configured document approval process for US database. Configured resources and sales quotes for US database. Amended and extended PDF emailing on US database for a number of documents. [Nav 2013r2].
Completed BACS extract report as per bank BACS specification. [Nav 2013r2].
Spent a lot of time end of last week and this week trying to resolve a Bullzip pdf issues on Nav v4 SP3. Weird issue re pdf file content and file name inconsistency and then even stranger issue on our local v4 database where the BullZip code hangs the Nav application with a busy message re current open form. So user cannot close the form list. Investigating further this week.
Plans for this week include 2 on sites (label printer configuration and amendment to Nav report as a result of new label printer) and on site training / management accounts visit. Other plans for this week include catch up on Nav 2016 client testing, complete approved development changes re cc email on Spindle Nav addon - basically a configuration change to Spindle and changes to a number of Nav reports [Nav 2013r2] and complete cheque remittance report changes as per client spec [Nav 2009].
That's all for this week folks.

Monday 27 June 2016

A few weeks ending 24/6/16

It has been a few weeks since the last blog update but I have been on my holidays.
So what has happened since the last blog?
Work completed last week:
Ongoing work re Nav 2016 implementation for European retailer included end user training instructions, development changes, development testing of xml files, posting checks. Now handed over for user acceptance testing. Still waiting for feedback. Issues yet to resolve include ftp file transfer to Nav directory.
Completed 2 new report developments for export to excel re stock. [Nav 2009 RTC].
Completed on site training for London client on Nav v5 DE.
Configured live company for resources and quotes for a client on Nav 2013r2 following successful user acceptance testing.
Completed on site support for management accounts handover to new financial controller.
Quiet a few potential new client enquiries re Nav 2016 implementations so prospects looking good. Will get more of an idea re timescales and what work we are needed for 1 particular project this week.
So a little quieter in June compared to previous months.
This week plan's include on site training visit, response to UAT on Nav 2016 implementation and report changes development for cheque and remittance [Nav 2009 RTC].
Other work: dynamicsnavukhelp web site has had an update (just the home page for now but more to follow) following a consultation with a marketing expert (thanks Jonathan) so let me know what you think. One of Jonathan's recommendations is to carry out another customer survey (last one completed in 2014) so watch this space.
That's all for this week folks.

Monday 6 June 2016

Week ending 3/6/16

Continuing with Nav 2016 implementation last week with changes to base configuration, xmlport amendments and a client visit to run through both after a basic training on Dynamics Nav. As a result of training, some development changes requested so need to quote for and agreed to run a parallel run for a period so the client can check results between systems.
Chased up queries on some development work and on go live dates (data migration work) but Spring Bank Holiday week meant a lot of clients were away. So expecting some feedback this week.
Plans for this week include 4 client visits providing on site Dynamics Nav support [Nav 2013r2, Nav v5DE] with one of these visits being a new client.
That's all for this week folks. Short and sweet and felt busier than it looks above.

Tuesday 31 May 2016

Week ending 27/5/16

Not so much a feature as a lesson worth remembering. Remember to insert a record after assigning the key fields and then use modify when adding more fields for the same record.
Developments completed last week included 5 xmls for receipt of data from EPOS system to allow creation of items, journal adjustments, POs, receipts and sales. Included page to show unprocessed xml files and types with page actions to process and move selected xmls. We also finished the main company configuration and changed this following xml file loads. [Nav 2016]. Amended PO import dataport [Nav 2009 Classic] to allow adding new lines to existing POs. Original created new POs and lines. Amended customer sales history by month for last 3 years to include total for report. [Nav app 2009, database v4].
Created step by step instructions for resource creation, sales quote creation and how to use make order functionality from sales quotes. Client's database has a bespoke check for a populated external document number. [Nav2013r2]. Created instructions on how to create new region codes and assign to vendors and customers. [Nav 2013r2].
First line support issues resolved re error on creating a closing year end journal. Issue as the existence of a number of journal line dimensions for same batch. Odd. [Nav v5 DE].
That's it for this week folks. Holidays soon! :)

Monday 23 May 2016

Week ending 20/5/16

Features discovered last week in Dynamics Nav include the new features of Dynamics Nav 2016 (like the c/side code prompts, not sure re user setup, permissions and role centres) and a learning curve in EPOS to xmls in Dynamics Nav 2016. See facebook updates for our learning curve re xmls (MinOccurs=zero, optional property on node names).
Work completed this week:
EPOS data to Dynamics Nav development re xmls started in earnest this week. Configured 1 xml to receive data last week, writing code to process the data this week. Also started the new company configuration last week and all configured but client yet to confirm their chart of accounts so that is stalled. Need this asap this week otherwise go live under threat. [Nav 2016].
Development completed included extending 'Post and email' functionality to 'Post, email and print' on service invoices, then extended same functionality to sales invoices and then adapted this to email pdfs for sales orders and quotes. [Nav 2013r2]. Completed BACS extract for Lloyds (very complicated compared to Nat West) and delivered to client for testing. [Nav 2013r2].  Developed specific field permission for posting an order as an invoice and requested test database access from a client to load in for testing. Basically uses user setup table and posting codeunit (minor change). [Nav 2013r2].
Other work included creating a new test company as a current copy of the live (love the way this can be done in Nav 2013r2 and beyond, so easy) and configured latest test company for sales quotes and resources for user testing this week pre go live next week. Spent some time this week configuring bespoke role centre for a new user (extended table fields, creating new role centre page after creating new activities page) and configured 2 new users for a client. [Nav 2013r2].
So busy week with this week being busy as well.
That's all for now folks.

Monday 16 May 2016

Week ending 12/5/16

A busy week. 2 on site visits to the same client: one to complete the client's management accounts (penultimate as new FC recruited) and the second to demo off the shelf functionality re sales quotes orders and resources. All went well and now implementation date for sales quotes and resources set for 2 weeks with a test company fully configured for use end of this week. Also client requested a few minor bespoke changes so will do that as well. [Nav 2013r2].
Configuration and data loads completed this week included UK data load for misc service contract data and comments (client bespoke data) which is not being tested by client [Nav 2013r2].
Developments completed included minor changes to some account schedules reports re column layout changes as a result of a confirmed date filter [Nav 2009 RTC].
Ongoing bug issue re sales price excel upload re closing dates for previous entries. Tried one fix which worked but then created other issues. Need to resolve this week. [Nav 2009 Classic application, v4 database].
New implementation for client on Nav 2016 to start in earnest this week. We now have the correct edition (CU6) so we are starting the basic configuration today and related development work later this week.
Spent a little time this week on cue cards and related changes which showed their power and the amount of work involved in configuring (more than I thought).
So busy week ahead and no client visits.
Onwards and upwards.

Monday 9 May 2016

Week ending 6/5/16

This was a quiet week but an exciting one for new customers / potential new customers and submitting quotes.
First point though: just discovered the way you can add a program to the start up menu in windows 10. Why do I need? We have a Teamviewer licence and up until a few windows updates ago this auto loaded on booting up. We had ticked the relevant box on the Teamviewer app. But now it does not. I blame windows. So using run, shell:startup you can add any application short cut. Ok so not Nav but still worthy of note especially for us as we have multiple machines on different versions of Nav (v4,2009,2013,2013r2,2015,2016) and different editions of Nav. So easier for us to control and work on these PCs remotely.
Anyway Nav work completed this week:
Developments - completed and demonstrated phase 1 of misc contract data and now have the go ahead to implement. Just awaiting UK data map from spreadsheet data reference to contract number in Nav and then we can set a go live date. US data already converted and loaded. Also created a new profile to access this new area including cue cards. Latter quite complex but done. Requires some deep thinking about what you want. [Nav 2013r2].
Configurations - set up resources, sales quotes and SOPs for a client to demo the end of this week. [Nav 2013r2].
Attended site this week for 1 client (on site support) and a potential client (pre sales and since submitted a quote for approval) covering Nav 2013r2 and Nav 2016. Fingers crossed quote is approved and if so a new client and again Nav 2016!!
New client gained this week following 2 months emailing and phone conversations. Quote approved and go live date (Nav 2016, new company, xml loads) set for end of May which is very tight to get xml loads (5) working. But exciting stuff!
So for actual work completed, as I say a quiet week. For prospects, great week!
Plans for this week are 2 client site visits and create and submit 3-4 quotes from last week.
That's all for this week folks. Keep cool but remember the weather will be back to normal end of this week.

Monday 2 May 2016

Week ending 29/4/16

Work completed last week included on site support visits (1 for Dynamics Nav support and the other for super user training part 2), completion of the ERP Solution requirements paper for a client and completion of phase 1 development for sundry data associated with service contracts.
The super user training was the 2nd part of a 2 day course. This time we ran through all the outstanding developments the client had listed with their MS Partner and I showed them how to resolve and we did. Seemed to go well.
The service contract sundries development was completed after a meeting and a demo of a development to date. Now the development is complete and some data migration completed in readiness for a final run through tomorrow at a client site.
Received 6 queries on the first draft ERP requirements paper submitted to the client and answered all of them. The client has now published the paper to prospective suppliers and my job is done.
Other work completed last week included minor amendments to some production reports [Nav 2009 app, v4 database].
On the prospects front, on ongoing conversation (2 months to date) on assisting a UK business configure and tailor a new UK Nav 2016 database re-ignited this week with a conversation with the client's Italian MS Partner (client based in Europe) to agree how we can help. As a result, quote confirmed and so the likelihood of this turning into a sale hopefully good. And received an enquiry this week re helping on a Nav 2016 database from London. As a result attending site this week for a pre sales meeting.
So what's on this week: client site attendance to run through service contract sundries development and pre sales meeting with prospective client on how we can help. Fingers crossed on the latter one!
That's if for this week folks!

Monday 25 April 2016

Week ending 22/4/16

Another week goes by......
No specific comments re features this week though the Nav application never fails to surprise. One feature with Classic (Nav 2009 and before) is the behaviour of codeunits and reports in the job scheduler. Weirdly reports will work but codeunits do not always.
Work completed this week included completion of first draft requirements specification document for a new ERP application for client review and amendment, on site super user training provided (with a follow up session this week) and on site support to review service contract misc data development (sample created for client comment and as a result completing this development this week for final client review next week).
Super user training was for Nav 2013r2 and covered overview of application, database objects, relationships and a number of 'how to' sessions on amending tables, new pages, amending pages and new reports and amending reports. Intense but seemed to go well.
Busy week for new enquiries with one potential client looking for a total solution re accounting services and Dynamics Nav. As this included taxation advice (we do not give) redirected them to a chartered accounting practise that also provides Dynamics Nav services.
Plans for this week are a demo of SOP and service SOP [Nav 2013r2], stage 2 re super user training (covering issues with rules for auto bank recs and cheque remittance report alignment issues) and amending a development re service management misc data to client requirements following discussion this week. So potentially a quiet week.
That's all for this week folks.

Monday 18 April 2016

Week ending 15/4/16

Work completed this week included:
Discussion with last end user re their requirements for an ERP solution. Working on a final draft requirements document with high level process flows added today and tomorrow for publication for comment and amendment by the client.
Developments completed included: further spacing amendments to cheque remittance report for a client to get the data to match the pre printed stationery. [Nav 2013r2].
Completed aged creditor KPI report. Basically an aged debt report with all request page options switched off and a change around of column orders. [Nav2013r2].
Attended on site for management accounts preparation and publication for March results for 2 countries off 2 different databases. [Mar 2013r2]. Completed some of the work remotely re accruals and prepayments. Site visit also included EC Sales return, 2 VAT returns, payroll set up.
So a quiet week really.
Plans for this week include completing draft 1 of the requirements document, on site visit to provide stage 1 of super user training (new client) [Nav 2013r2] and on site attendance to demo SOP and some development completed for review re misc data for service contracts.
That's all for this week folks.

Monday 11 April 2016

Week ending 8/4/16

Slight delay in publication as attended client site this morning!
Nothing of interest re features of Dynamics Nav this week though we are having fun (not) making changes to the cheque layout in Nav 2013r2. The joys. Oh and while I remember emailing pdfs from Nav 2013R2 also interesting. Finally resolved issues a client was having by not using download to retrieve the file off the server and saving to the end user's desktop. Weird.
Work completed this week:
Fixed emailing pdfs issue (Nav could not find pdf created to attached to an email for SMTPing). [Nav 2013r2].
Development changes to existing development to fix logo showing on sales invoices on print and pdf created for email, add in Email CC for including buying groups on emails and in an additional language code for France for same development (SMTP emailing). [Nav 2013]
Configured test company for a client for showing the functionality of sales order processing and service order processing. As a result client has requested stock configuration on the test company and a demonstration of drop shipments. So working on that this week. [Nav 2013r2].
Attended client site to provide on site support. [Nav 2013r2].
Providing a quote to a potential client for new company creation and initial configuration for Nav 2016 and for xml data feeds to Nav 2016 from EPOS software. First element already submitted for approval but client wants a complete quote for all work. This will follow later this week. [Nav 2016].
Completed some development changes to accounts schedules overview re default of Day (changed to default to Month) and date filter (default current month, will always need last month). [Nav 2013r2].
Updated ERP requirements document for meetings held with users the week before last. A few more elements to add to the requirements report so should be ready by the end of the month.
So busy week. That's all for this week folks.

Monday 4 April 2016

Week ending 1/4/16

Interesting features of Dynamics Nav from this last week: the request page save property takes priority over any report called from c/side code so that, for example, if a report has a request page for showing a logo image and a pass data function to pre define your logo settings when calling a report, then if the user chose not to show the logo the last time the report was run, doesn't matter what you pass to the report as a preference the logo will show as per last settings from the user. Needs to be logged in as the same user obviously. Fix very easy - switch off request page save property.
Work completed last week:
Created a new company with base configuration for a client. [Nav v4].
Completed data migration for a number of businesses including opening balance sheet and transactions to March 2016. [Nav 2013r2].
Completed correct for objects export for a client where they add in an object range specific to the services they provide to other Dynamics Nav users. So demo install plus bespoke objects stopped working. Did not compile. Now fixed. [Nav 2013r2].
No on site client visits last week and only one booked this week.
That's it for this week folks.

Tuesday 29 March 2016

Week ending 25/3/16

I hope you all had a great Easter!
I have forgotten how much I dislike amending reports on Dynamics Nav 2013R2 - especially those written for Nav 2009 RTC with the infamous GetData / SetData code within the Layout area. Specific issue last week was report 1401 cheque remittance report. Once resolved all the changes (easy ones were the formatting changes, more complex adding more column totals) we then faced the fixed number of lines per A4 page issue. Then I remembered in Nav 2009 RTC this is set as an iteration maximum. So fixed this as well to allow for things such as a vendor address at the top of the remittance. Anyway after a few days of banging head against a brick wall, all fixed and delivered to client for testing.
Other work completed last week:
Attended 2 client sites to record ERP requirements data for, eventually, sending to potential ERP suppliers. I will be getting the notes taken into a requirements document (updating it) this week.
Attended 1 client site to provide on site Dynamics Nav support [Nav 2013r2]. Received a number of development requests and other work some of which will be finished today (transactions in a new company (to Nav) to date to be loaded and posted - data conversion done) and some tested today (tweaking of aged debt report to show columns by complete months).
So last week mainly on site visits. This week no on site visits but plenty of work to do.
That's all folks.

Monday 21 March 2016

Week ending 18/3/16

Time flies when you are having fun. Easter from Friday!
Work completed this week included on site attendance at 2 sites -1 to start ERP requirements specification by collecting data on what is required. This involves a number of visits to client site to discuss end user requirements as well as expectation as to what the ERP application will provide out of the box. More discussions with end users this week. The other client site visit was to get standard Nav report working on a label printer. Previous solution was text file creation. All working using printer selections table to default report to label printer. [Nav 2009 application, v4 database].
New company set up and configured for client with no customers and vendors but the same base configuration as the existing business. [Nav 2009 Classic].
Migrated 2 years financial data for a company on Dynamics Nav and balanced off ready for use for March 2016 transactions. Converted budget data to load into Dynamics Nav. Amend a number of accounts schedule column layouts for new financial year. [Nav 2013r2]. Review a number of CVs and comment on for new Financial Controller's role at client.

Plans for this week are 3 on site visits. 2 days for completing the requirements specification data collection for a future ERP selection and 1 day on site support [Dynamics Nav 2013 R2]. One all ERP requirements data collected it will take a few days to pull the requirements document together which will be done next week.
So that's it folks. Have a great Easter!

Monday 14 March 2016

Week ending 11/3/16

This week's interesting fact re Dynamics Nav -
‘Warehouse item tracking permission issue. Permissions held in page / form 6550 Nav 2009 RTC so need to include this in any development. #Nav2009Wwarehouse’.
Work completed last week included 3 on site visits (2 days management accounts work and Dynamics Nav on site support, 1 day run through VAT reconciliation work completed for a client for the last 2 financial years) and changes to report developments (excel sales price load, amend quantity on assembly to recalculate value within report). Covering Nav v2009 RTC, Nav 2013r2.
Final fix for excel upload re warehouse item journals. [Nav 2009 RTC]. Bugs re line creation finally sorted by treating warehouse journal line table as very buggy. Think all the creation code does not sit on the table but in a codeunit. Anyway fixed now.
It was a good week for quotes - send a few out and most already approved. Quite a few requests for remittance / cheque reports or cheque reports on their own. Always thought we have moved away from this in UK to BACS reports but obviously not. There is a standard Nav report remittance / cheque but as most clients use pre printed stationery the vast bulk of any work on this is testing, aligning, testing etc. Also agreed terms for a bulk PO for another client for 10 days (so price reduced) for various elements of work on Nav 2013r2 subject to NDA being signed off by FPC. So just waiting for the NDA.
Plans for this week include first on site visit to new client to map current processes and on site support to fix Nav for new label printer.
That's all for this week folks.

Monday 7 March 2016

Week ending 4/3/16

Interesting facts re Dynamics Nav this week included how to export any BLOB type field. Nav holds as an * so you cannot copy and paste. So process involves converting this to text and then creating a file. So why is this of interest? Nav notes (not comments) and specifically their content are BLOBs.
Anyway work completed this week:
Completed data migration for opening trial balance for 2 companies. [Nav 2013r2]
Review and comment on potential candidate CVs for key finance role in a client.
Minor report amendment for a pick list [Nav 2009 RTC].
Report development to allow warehouse item journal upload from excel [Nav 2009 Classic] approved and completed.
Enhance sales price excel upload [v4 database, 2009 Classic application] to auto close (end date) old prices where minimum quantity is 0 or 1 rather than on an exact match on minimum quantity (as well as other key fields).
Amend report for stock valuation to exclude goods in bins when calculation free stock quantity and valuations. In other words not free so reduce free stock.
Finished quote with business partner for Nav 2016 new install, configuration, data migration and training. Submitted to client for approval and waiting to here. Watch this space.
Plans for this week include on site attendance to run through VAT rec work completed for last 2 years trading for a client [Nav 2009], 2 days on site to complete management accounts [Nav 2013r2], run through proposed development for ancillary data re service contracts [Nav 2013r2] and potentially assisting a client with interviews.
That's all for this week folks.

Monday 29 February 2016

Week ending 26/2/16

Features of Dynamics Nav found this week - exporting Notes which are technically BLOBS so you cannot simply export from a table. Needs conversion first.
Work completed last week included:
Instructions on bulk auto emailing sales invoices as part of the posting shipped sales order process completed and sent to client.
Development completed to allow warehouse reclassification journal load from excel including warehouse related item tracking. [Nav 2009 RTC].
Resolved incorrect posting of depreciation issue for v5 DE database. Basically client had reversed the transaction and not cancelled the entries. This is only available in the fixed asset module and if not used but transaction reversed, you cannot rerun depreciation calculation.
On site visit with client to discuss next month end planning (my accounts job) and next set of proposed changes re Dynamics Nav. [Nav 2013r2].
Did some HR related stuff this week for a client as well re job specification for a Financial Controller role and initial review of CVs from candidates.
Plans for this week include review of extra data requirement for service management module for software rental client, complete label printing reporting solution and complete development to amend item list [Nav 2009 RTC] to include GOODS IN bin data by lots.
So quiet week overall.

Monday 22 February 2016

Week ending 19/2/16

Work completed last week included:
Smtp auto email settings in Nav changed and now working. [Nav 2013].
Confirmed best method for exporting GL entries to excel to work around 5000 line xml limit. [Nav 2013].
Confirmed our costs for moving accounts schedules from v5 DE to 2006 GB. We are not doing the upgrade (not something we do) but given quote received by partner for moving accounts schedules we provided an alternative quote at a tenth of the cost for this specific task.
Completed 3 way VAT reconciliation work for client and results delivered with recommendations. [Nav 2009 RTC].
Re-analysis and reposting of recharge lines for a client so that recharge reflects recovery not revenue, misc changes to accounts schedules, send spend reports to various members of client staff. [Nav 2013r2].
Create new read only permission set for client. Amend as required for permission issues around bespoke tables and German addons. [v5 DE].
Fixed PO import issue on file where file not in document number order. [Nav 2009 Classic].
Prospects wise re more work, contact who started a new contract role for sort out Dynamics Nav implementation in touch last week to update me. I would provide Nav expertise, she is the project manager.
Yet to hear from client re NDA sign off and therefore the start of more work following receipt of their application backup.
Outstanding work yet to do which needs finishing this week includes:
Last financial year final postings for a limited company. [Nav 2013r2].
Balance and clear VAT recs for last year. [Nav 2013r2].
Complete initial data migration for new companies (opening balance sheets). [Nav 2013r2]
Complete step by step instructions on smtp auto email on posting sales orders as invoices. [Nav 2013].
Complete label printer report and load into live database for testing. [Nav 2009 Classic, v4 database].
Developments to complete this week (quoted for approved last week) include an excel import for warehouse reclass journals. [Nav 2009 RTC].
Need to chase up transfer of MS Partner for our client to our business partner in Ireland and therefore confirm our first line support costs. [Nav 2013r2].
One on site client visit booked for later this week.

Monday 15 February 2016

Week ending 12/2/16

Quieter week this week.
Work completed this week:
Still trying to resolve issues with SMTP set up in Dynamics Nav 2013. Basically Nav not connecting to smtp server. Trying to resolve with client IT support. [Nav 2013]
Completed management accounts for UK and US business for January including accruals, prepayments and using accounts schedules in Dynamics Nav extensively. [Nav 2013r2].
Attend client site to provide support on various issues including VAT set up and posting, dimension reporting (global and non global, the latter using Analysis by Dims) and various other issues. [Nav 2009 RTC]. As a result of this work signed off to 3 way reconcile VAT statements for last 2 years quarter ends from return submitted (pdf) to Nav VAT statement to Nav GL codes for VAT. Due to start this this week.
Completed budget loads into Nav. [Nav 2013r2].
Confirmed object changes over last calendar year for client. [v5 DE].
Just been asked to quote for excel file load for warehouse reclass journals - obviously not 2013, 2015 or 2016 as you can copy and paste direct but for 2009 RTC. Will get this quote out today with work scheduled for next week.
That's it for this week folks.

Monday 8 February 2016

Week ending 5/2/16

2 on site client site visits completed last week - one was for an existing client providing Dynamics Nav support and the other was a new client (1st visit) cramming 4 days training into 1. [Nav 2013r2] The latter (Central London) was a very intense day and was equally split between a question and answer session from 4 end users and a run through the financial management module for 1 user. Then received another on site support request later in the week for the same week but could not do. So this may be a very important client re work. Time will tell. Sent off signed (from FPC) NDA so just waiting to receive fully signed version.
Developments completed included enhancing a report showing last 3 years sales report by customer (excel export) by month for all 3 years to include open sales order (not invoiced value) for the current year split by month. [Nav v2009 application, Nav v4 database].
Looks like we have a fix for smtp issues re nav 2013. Issue on the client network and exchange server settings. Will be testing today.
First line support has a number of issue calls including corrupt pdf files in emails for sales invoicing (v4, extensive use of SLEEP command, issues from change in server by client) which we are struggling to replicate and therefore fix. Granted access to the same server today so we will try again to replicate. Definitely a server performance / Nav performance issue.
Out a client sites for 3 days this week. 2 days as a management accountant (preparing management accounts in Nav) [Nav 2013r2] and 1 day on site support [Nav 2009 Classic]. Both local.
So a quieter week last week but busy with more on site visits this week.
That's all for now folks.

Monday 1 February 2016

Week ending 29/1/16

Another week in the office (no client visits) but busy none the less.
Features found in Dynamics Nav:
smtp and create emails with pdfs attached in a hosted Nav 2013 requires different treatment for the location of the saved pdf file. Weird one!
First issue with dimension set id for vendor standard purchase codes in Nav 2013. Those assigned to a vendor purchase code do not come through when you Get Vendor Codes from an invoice or order. Dimension set id does and when you view the dimensions from the invoice or order line the dimensions are shown and as you exit they are shown on the line. Nothing before though! Again weird.
US database specific one this [Nav 2013r2] - you can configure US sales tax in Nav but beware - if you do not complete various ad hoc tick boxes, what works in standard sales invoicing does not for service management invoicing. All looks ok in service management until you post. Then sales tax disappears. Again a really strange one!
Work completed last week:
At last worked out a solution for label printing from Nav 2009 that does not involve creating a text file with printer specific language commands. Went back to creating a label type report in standard Nav and then tweaked for label sizes! Works - as you would expect.
Completed export to excel from sales price form using a form action. [Nav 2009 Classic].
Completed sales price excel import development. [Nav 2009 Classic] Having some strange issues when it comes to finding current lines that are the same in excel and Nav. Sometimes the codes cannot find what is in Nav. Need to resolve this week.
First line support issues resolved last week:
Completed a number of changes to improve and fix bugs re Nav 2009 Classic report.
Investigated and suggested solution for email pdf reports from posted sales invoice. [Nav v4]. Previous development completes had to use SLEEP command in Nav to slow the process down so Nav can find pdf created. Client moved users onto another server (not new) and generally performance slow (even for print preview) so emailing pdfs crashing or cannot find pdf. So suggested increasing SLEEP from 1000 (1 sec) to 5000 (5 secs). See what feedback we get this week.
Plans for this week: 2 client visits mid week - one to provide accountant and Dynamics Nav expertise, the other to train1 person on the financial management module on Dynamics Nav 2013r2 in 1 day. The latter will be a very busy day!
That's all for this week folks!
