Friday 12 December 2014

Week ending 12/12/14

Another week goes by. :)
On the accounts side, still chasing up books for tax returns for a few clients. Just completed first draft partnership accounts for a client with a few queries to follow up next week pre submission to client.
On the Dynamics Nav side, completed the following work:
On site 'master' Dynamics Nav class in London for a day.
Change to dataport to remove line feeds copied into Nav in error by end users. Learnt a lot re ascii codes this week as a result. All very useful.
Further and final fix re text overflow issue for a report previously developed. Number length logic error.

Quotes submitted but not yet approved for:
Sweep up unallocated receipts and related ledger entries where applies to id common.
Dimension auto allocation development to allow user / project type dimension codes to be split based on user assigned split across dimensions.
All not yet approved but likely to be approved in January at the earliest now.
Super user training (on site 3 days) booked for early January.

First line support desk activities have included:
Resolved warehouse shipment would not post query - a bin code issue.
Confirmed issue with csv file export down to invisible characters on Nav data caused by users copying and pasting from excel into Nav. Development amended to account for these characters (see comment above).
Completed some permission changes against users for a client. Confirmed reason for accrual feed at zero values to client - down to zero values on a particular column within an excel file loaded and invoices created.
Resolved accounts schedule difference issue (down to design) and consolidation issue where consolidated company included in consolidation. Surprised it allows this.
Completed a list of developments completed on a version 4 database for a client since 2005.

For the members of my family who have told me they read this blog, told you I would mention you on the blog. Looking forward to seeing some of you on 20th at the wedding. Don't forget I am not driving (so definitely drinking) and father of the groom is buying (pretty sure that is what he said) at the Piano bar at 12.30pm. So see you then!
That's all for now folks. For a change I am stopping work now as there is nothing happening in the business. Expect next week to be even quieter.

Friday 5 December 2014

Week ending 5/12/14 - not long til Xmas!

This week at FPC.
On the accounts and tax side, client's chased for books or missing data. The deadline is fast approaching for personal tax returns.
On the Dynamics Nav side of the business, 2 client on site visits this week and 1 booked for next week. One this week was a meet and greet with a discussion on upgrading from Dynamics Nav v4 to 2015 and what the benefits would be. We do not do upgrades so this may or may not lead to more work if the client can find a business case.
Another client visit for a very intense day on what Dynamics Nav has on offer. The client is a current user but only for base financials. So the day consisted of running through all the functionality in Nav. Went well.
Also confirmed this week maximum number of users for Dynamics Nav is circa 500. More than I thought but there must be some benefits to the Internet friendly end user interface.
Next week I am at a client site providing some on site training re Dynamics Nav - or as the client calls it a master class.
Work completed this week was mainly around first line support. Issues resolved included:
Confirmed reason for error in excel data sales data file load. Error fixed by client on excel file and reloaded successfully.
Completed a number of bug fixes / enhancements for developments previously delivered. Included text overlap error resulting from inconsistent text lengths for related but different objects.
Confirmed latest client UAT database copy of live from last week.
Developments completed this week, delivered and now in live:
Transfer order excel file load.
Quotes provided this week for:
Alternate business address for new business within set of Nav books.
Adding posted document line descriptions to GL entries form.
Bar code search development - so when bar codes (yes codes) are added to the cross reference table on Nav, a item field called bar code search is updated with all bar codes assigned to the item. the user can then user standard Nav data fields to search for bar codes.
Auto match posted customer ledger entries with common reference point. Really a clear up for posted entries from another development that did not clear due to net refunds.
Waiting for approval and will then schedule the work.
Still looking at / investigating the following:
Jet report issue #VALUE error.
Journals created but at a zero value for sales legacy load (journal represents cost accrual which is created at the same time as sales invoice data).
That's it for this week. :)

Friday 28 November 2014

Week ending 28/11/14

Still relatively quiet on the Dynamics Nav services side. Gained first line support for next calendar year from a client which is brilliant news.
Ongoing support for customer remittance allocations csv file loads this week. Fixing issues as they arise (a few but then development testing and actual data / end user testing totally different) and suggested further enhancements to allow a file to load rather than trip out. Some issues down to data quality and variations and lesson learnt at FPC re quotes for this kind of work. First line support very quiet this week.
Transfer order excel file upload development signed off this week and delivered today after development testing. Client will complete extensive testing to make sure working as required which may lead to some minor changes.
2 on site client visits planned for next week as per client requests to review use of Dynamics Nav and future client plans. So may lead to more work, may not. Fingers crossed. First set of client site visits in a couple of months.
Enquiries this week limited to web services demo request off our web page. Probably need to revisit web page, LinkedIn, Google Ads, Bing Ads in the new year to update etc.
On the accounts and tax side, last few clients sent in their books for annual accounts and personal tax comps. So these will be done pre the January 31st deadline which is fast looming. 2 months to go!
That's all for this week.

Friday 21 November 2014

Week ending 21/11/14

A quieter week on Dynamics Nav.
No response for ball park implementation costs submitted to potential clients but confirmed a discount on offer from Microsoft for Dynamics Nav purchases to 24th Dec.
Auto matching phase 2 development (allows changes to due dates and on hold status from vendor ledger entries associated with part receipt for customer invoices) delivered to a client's test database for user testing. Instructions on how to use sent as well.
New report developed for item listing including free stock and quantity on POs with expected receipt in the next 30 days.
Allocations csv file load development went live this week. A number of issues arose (document type document number imbalances) as a result of live csv files being processed which gave rise to significant changes to the development. All done and working.
Confirmed payment discounts set up and process with Dynamics Nav and how it operates with VAT.
Most significant issue this week was broadband failure Thursday. Caused a few issues but only lasted half a day.
As I said a quiet week. That's all for now folks.

Friday 14 November 2014

Week ending 14/11/14

Another week gone by. But at least it has stopped raining!
On the Dynamics Nav side, a few enquiries this week from brand new potential Dynamics Nav users. Linked up with a Microsoft Partner that sells the licences to confirm ball park costs.
Also confirmed to one of our clients process to change Dynamics Nav partner - not us as we are too small. Waiting to hear what the client wants to do. If they change we can action a change of licence or quote for an upgrade from version 5 to 2015.
Developments completed:
Amendments to csv import file to allow remittance data in file to create receipt journal and assign applications during load process. Amendments included single line bank entries by unique payment id (was balancing entry), allow for payments on account (no applications), include payment types (new field for journal table) and confirm value of receipt by bank account.
Added column headings to an export dataport for data going from Nav to legacy system.
Dataport completed to allow item and purchase price data changes to be loaded from csv file with column headings as first line. Data load completed as well.
Added vendor number filter to user id table to ensure end users can only see relevant items.
Final stage re auto match for receipts and linked payment invoices. User can now select line items that make up a summary invoice to create a receipt line and when posted related vendor ledger entries will be taken off hold and the due date recalculated.
Step by step screen based instructions created for 2 developments to allow users to use.
First line support issues resolved:
Item tracking in 2009 does not force a user to select a New Lot Number from a drop down list. Fixed via table relation property on item tracking table.
Confirmed rounding error on posting purchase return order on Nav 2009 SP1 is on a hot fix. Our client has contacted their Solution Centre who will supply the fix for testing. So a known bug.
Confirmed issue with budget load from excel into Nav 2009. End user using bespoke menu not standard Nav. Confirmed standard Nav to be used.
Confirmed issue re dimension 3/4 totalling on accounts schedule down to licence - or lack of. No access to analysis views.
Confirmed payment tolerance is per line transaction.
Other:
Telephone enquiry from current client re combining several sources of legacy data to a summary invoice in Nav. Awaiting more details to formalise a quote.
Basically all this work has covered versions 4, 5, 2009, 2013.
That's the update for this week! :)

Friday 7 November 2014

Week ending 7/11/14

I know what you are thinking - not long since the last update!
On the accounts / tax side, a few more books, accounts and tax completed and bills paid. More to follow but well ahead of scheduled deadline for personal tax returns.
On the Dynamics Nav side, developments completed this week include:
Amended remittance advice csv file load to allow multiple customer accounts under a single payment file id.
Other work completed this week:
Brief demo of Nav 2015 GB to a client via TeamViewer. As a result submitted a ball park figure to get the client from version 5 to version 2015.
Quotes submitted and approved this week include:
Remittance advice csv file import enhancements.
Amendment to Analysis View report to show posted document line descriptions by GL entry.
New form to show number of GL transactions.
New menu options off customers, items to sales order archive data.
New dataport for loading item and purchase price data to each table.
Amendment to portals to reflect items listed for specific customers and vendor links and to remove columns from some forms.
New dataport to export customer details.
New fields off customer card to show last receipt date and value.
Changes to posted sales invoice and credit memo line layouts for specific customers.
Bug fixing completed for:
Auto purchase price update from change to PO direct unit cost - confirm box showing after change already made.
First line support issues resolved:
Get receipts not collecting receipts as currency code on receipts not same as vendor. Removed currency code from created purchase invoice. Default currency code and vendor currency code same.
Posting error re discounts on GL lines for a PO. Caused by lack of GL codes on GL Posting Setup. Actually error on PO line - no discount to be applied to GL code line.
So busy week. Did not start out like that but this is all good when you are running your own business.
Replaced one of the business PCs with a Dell XPS8700. Very impressed so far - really quiet. On the downside a Windows 8.1 machine but on the upside Dynamics Nav versions 5, 2009 and 2013 all sitting on the same PC. All good!

Friday 31 October 2014

Week ending 31/10/14

This is just a blog to record what we as a business have been doing this week - actually for the last 2 weeks as I did not publish a blog last Friday.
On the accounts and tax side, some client books, accounts and tax returns completed well before the deadline of 31/1/15. So that is all good. About half way through so plenty of time to complete all pre the deadline.
On the Dynamics Nav side, we have completing the following jobs for clients over the last 2 weeks:
On site training for Nav 2013 financial modules but also including Rapid Start (aka in 2009 as Data Migration).
Developments completed for receipt and remittance advice csv files (load data, create journal, end user then posts), auto purchase price creation where direct cost on PO line changed and misc changes to forms, pages etc for new menus, new columns and new rows. Also completed minor changes to dataports created for sales and purchase document imports / exports as requested.
Started phase 2 of an auto match development for amending linked customer and vendor ledger entries where, say, a detailed line on a summary invoice is settled, the corresponding line on the vendor ledger has the due date reset and is taken off hold. Should be complete next week ready for user acceptance testing.Client signed off phase 1 this week so will be in live next. Phase 1 was auto match on a posted summary sales invoice to all vendor ledger entry lines linked.
Completed some final elements of data migration for version 4 for a client.

First line support issues resolved / answered for payment tolerances, error message meanings, transaction explanations.
That's it for this week.

Friday 17 October 2014

Week ending 17/10/14

Apologies for the lack of imagination re blog title. I have run out of ideas!
Relatively quiet week on Dynamics Nav side of the business. Quotes completed this week for 5 clients. 1 signed off and development completed. Remainder not yet signed off. So prospective work for the next few weeks if the quotes are signed off.
Final amendments completed for aged stock report and development approved by client.
Chased up progress re client for auto matching development re final phase. Only really worth starting final phase when all other phases signed off and in the live database. This is likely to happen next week so final phase development work scheduled to start next week.
Chased up approval for mod on Dynamics Nav reminders process. Tested by client and approved but not yet on the live database. Need final confirmed approval via email and then we will transfer from test to live.
Completed 4 new dataports for a client this week re open sales orders exports and open sales order imports.
A number of first line support queries this week re depreciation calculation (not enough being charged so use force number of days), issue with accounts scheduling and row numbering (10, 100, 1000 considered by sql to be in the same range), issue with Intrastat Journals where bespoke value field using sum of document lines not document line on its own.
No new clients this week but we received 2 new enquiries - one for training in Manchester and one for using a product called Concur with Dynamics Nav. Could not help re latter but quoted for on site training for Dynamics Nav 2013.
On the accounts / tax side, again a quiet week but processing of books ongoing.
That's all for this week.

Friday 10 October 2014

Week ending 10/10/14

But at least it has not been that long since my last update. :)
So what has happened this week?
On the Dynamics Nav side of the business, attended client site to run through some accumulated queries on Dynamics Nav v5. Last visit well over 2 years ago so quite a few. All resolved. Probably be back in another 2 years. Received a PO today to confirm we will provide 2 days on site training on Dynamics Nav 2013 for later this month - new client! Completed work on a new report for another client re stock ageing and quoted for / completed some other developments requested in the week. Various support calls and emails from a number of clients - all resolved. Next week collaborating with another business to help create purchase order imports and sales order exports to / from Dynamics Nav 2009.
Amendment to excel data file import requested and quoted for this week. Waiting to here back.
So a good week but a little quiet. This is week 2 of a 2 month trial for first line support and all going well. Though very quiet calls / email wise today.
On the accounts / tax side, client books received over the last few weeks and some done already. Loads of time pre the personal tax deadline of 31/1/15 but we are getting on with the work.
Minor re-design of the web site this week to look a little more modern. Only the Dynamics Nav web site (http://www.dynamicsnavukhelp.co.uk/) though at the moment to see what the feedback is like.
That's all for this week.

Friday 26 September 2014

New Nav edition

Just a quick blog this week! Have been on holiday for a few days so not much work done.
I was slightly caught out by the news of a new version of Dynamics Nav that has been announced recently. Nav 2015. Has, to us, a similar look and feel to Nav 2013 R2.
But the goods news is we have the Nav 2015 W1 demo installed at our offices so if you would like to see and use via TeamViewer please drop us an email and we will send the TeamViewer id and pass code to you. Email neil@fpconsult.co.uk if this is of interest.
More details at http://www.waldo.be/2014/07/18/microsoft-dynamics-nav-2015-is-announced/.
Other developments completed this week have included amendments to current reports for lot data, new menu options on some Nav 2009 forms, misc first line support emails. Short work week.
More potential work from existing clients next week and quote sent off this week for a potential new client for Nav 2013 training on site.
So still busy!
Have a great week end all followers. That's all for this week but not so long since the last update!

Thursday 18 September 2014

The end of summer the beginning of autumn so must be time to publish a blog!

Or in other words it has been a while. Busy few months but a brief break next week in York so something to look forward to.
On the Dynamics Nav side of the business, very busy. Most of the way through major development (http://www.dynamicsnavukhelp.co.uk/services/developments/) for an existing client for loading sales and purchase data from legacy systems. Still last phase to be development but 1/3rd live, 1/3rd ready for UAT and the remainder to be developed.
New report developments completed to spec this week. Existing reports amended as required.
A mix of on client site and at our offices training completed (http://www.dynamicsnavukhelp.co.uk/services/training/) covering the usual financial modules.
Nav reminders process amended per client requirements - just waiting to go to the live database after UAT. All good so far.
New first line support trial starts 1st October for 2 months. More details of this type of service at http://www.dynamicsnavukhelp.co.uk/services/support/first-line-support/
Step by step process based instructions (with supporting screen dumps from either the Nav uk demo database or the client's database) across a number of modules completed and delivered in the last few months.
Completed some date compression work and testing for a client to see how long it would take and the benefits. Definitely a catch 22 for this standard Nav functionality and not really going to resolve performance issues. The conclusion was more investigation required.
Very few on site visits to clients in August / September which is unusual but also we did not experience the usual slow down of work in the summer. So cannot complain.
Announcement this week re Nav 2015 available from 1st October 2014. Had a quick look and it does not look as significant a version update compared to Nav 2013. More details I am sure will follow but the look and feel is as per Nav 2013.
On the accounts side, a few changes re clients. But tax deadlines are looming so clients books are arriving for annual accounts and tax calculations. All good.
So that's all for this time. Promised I will try and update the blog more regularly. May be next time I publish a blog Scotland will be independent. :)

Friday 18 July 2014

A little warm to work.....

It has been a while since the last blog but part of that is down to 2 weeks vacation!
But it has been busy on the Dynamics Nav services front.
The Nav 2013 implementation went live June and no further action required from me. Chatted over the phone to check up on how it is going and all good to date.
New enquiries in the last few weeks and new customers. Attended site this week for a client in Yorkshire to provide reminders training. More enquiries re further on site training for other Dynamics Nav modules with dates to be confirmed. Also development enquiries as well.
Really getting into a substantial development for another client on sales invoice data loads from legacy systems that require summary invoices with various different rules for different customer types. Most of the way through the development but still need to complete extensive testing once complete. Further work required for accruals from invoice data loads and purchase invoice data loads. All good stuff!
So what else has been happening! Various first line support calls re Dynamics Nav queries on dimensions, for example. Also attended site for a client for fixing various issues. Also had queries re Nav 2013 in terms of licensing, infrastructure etc.
But Dynamics Nav activity quietening down a little reflecting the usual quiet period over the summer break.
The accounts and tax side relatively quiet as well although books are being received for personal tax calcs and returns. No doubt this will turn into a steady stream over the next 3 months.
That's all for now folks. Let's hope the temperature drops a little.

Friday 20 June 2014

Another few interesting weeks...

I had no idea this blog was being followed by so many people! :)
Another busy few weeks on the Dynamics Nav service side. Nav 2013 implementation project went live 1st June and to date all good. Went live with all users as super users but now 75% of the users have the correct permissions (non super user). Getting this right reminded me that the permission sets on Dynamics Nav are not great. Not enough overlaps or to put it another way too many gaps. Will sort the remaining user permissions in the next month. So implementation project complete and client happy as all data migrated (masters, open ledger entries and open sales and purchase orders) and application in use. This project is finished.
A few more potential customer enquiries this week for our Dynamics Nav services - one for another implementation and one for ad hoc / regular support. Latter enquiry in the same village as we are based. Nearly fell off my chair. Usually end up all over the country / world providing Dynamics Nav services.
Delivered some report and other developments this week - very fast turnaround. Pulling together quotes for other work today. Completed some on site training at Corby last week and as a result will be providing a quote for more work. Just waiting for a copy of their live database to confirm details of work required and therefore a quote.
Currently investigating another development requirement re lots. Will confirm quote for approval today / over the week end.
Complete open vendor and customer ledger entries as part of data migration work for an existing client that acquired a new business recently.
On the accounts / tax side, really started to get accounts created / tax returns for clients who have provided books to us. Chased a few more up. This will really start to get going over the next 3 months but the deadlines for personal tax not until Jan 2015. Ages yet! :)
Anyway that's all for now folks.

Friday 30 May 2014

Been busy...............

Yet again been a while since the last blog. Last week out all week and next week out all week.
So busy on the Dynamics Nav front. Go live over the week end for Nav 2013 implementation project. Client ready though usual nerves around a new ERP application. On site all week next week providing on site support and completing data migration for open sales and purchase orders, opening stock and open customer and purchase ledger entries. These will all be done next week. Then I am off the case (no more on site work for 3 days a week) and the client will be the usual FPC client i.e. they are in touch when they need our services.
Also about to get an order for development for another client. More than 10 days PO which is good. Original deadline for completion now but all sorts of delays (result of client's business acquisition) has meant that development deadline will now be before end of June.
New client booked a day's training on Dynamics Nav general ledger and reporting.
Bar that a quiet week for Dynamics Nav. Having a relaxing Friday which makes a nice change. Calm before next week's storm of a go live.
On the accounts / tax side, nothing exciting happening. Books are coming on for annual accounts / personal tax returns but these are early. Deadline not until Jan 31 2015.
That's all for this week. No blog next week.

Friday 16 May 2014

Not blogged for some time...

It has been very busy at FPC. Especially on the Dynamics Nav side of the business. Nav 2013 implementation project due to go live on 1st June still on track but issues arising. Some typical of any implementation project (left field stuff that you cannot predict will happen) but most reflect the imminent go live. :) Found out this week that Nav 2013 profiles can get corrupted (not worked out how as yet) but discovered how to restore and what not to do when restoring profiles.
More developments delivered this week to a number of clients including a vendor statement (more complex than it sounds) and alternative logos for businesses within a group using 1 company on Dynamics Nav v4. Same client has also requested quote for legacy sales and purchase invoice data from a business recently acquired. Just awaiting final formats for files that need to be loaded and agreement as to what type of data load (dataport v excel upload) required.
Also completed some quotes for Dynamics Nav training (general ledger and reporting) and report development for potential clients. Waiting to hear back. So the market for Dynamics Nav still very active.
On non Dynamics Nav work, completed shared services proposed process flows for a client including proposed organisation chart.
Next week will be another busy week for Dynamics Nav work with the Nav 2013 implementation go live only 2 weeks off, a few client visits and some planned data migration work. Will also need to confirm quotes for developments.
On the accounts side, starting to clients' books for the latest tax year for accounts and personal tax comps.
That's all for this week.

Saturday 26 April 2014

Fully booked out for the next 2 weeks

First of all apologies for the late blog and no blog Easter week.
Dynamics Nav market has really taken off. Turning work down and also meeting clients in the hotel I am staying in while away on the Nav 2013 implementation in the South.
So busy busy.
Good week on Nav 2013 implementation with good progress made. Issues still arising, bugs raised and being fixed. Not far until go live so more issues will arise. Had an interesting time getting open sales orders to work using xml ports on Nav 2013. Incompatible date issue which resolved by making text type field and evaluating. Also had a problem re the Euro sign on some accounts (as part of the account number) so loaded in legacy account number and got the xmlport to map. All workarounds and all worked.
New request for a report to quote on next week for an existing client. Delivered vendor statement report for another client. Much more complex that I expected so took ages. Awaiting feedback.

Terms and scope agreed on consultancy work - not Dynamics Nav. Need to schedule work next week for delivery pre 9th May.
On the accounts / payroll side, still quite but ticking over.
Short and sweet blog this week as lost 1 day to a bank holiday. Out all next week at client sites and the week after.

Friday 11 April 2014

4 out of 5 days at client sites this week, same next.....

On the Dynamics Nav side of the business, another busy week for both current and potential clients. Now having to start turning business away we are so busy.
3 days on site again this week for the Nav 2013 implementation which included a Solution Centre walkthrough with the client. Weird one this - basically it was a review of whether the client was fit to use Dynamics Nav and ready for go live. A first for me and lasted all day.
New client for report developments. Quote approved and first report completed and delivered today.
New client for non Dynamics Nav work after contact with my boss from Hays. Work is assisting with shared services creation. Letter of engagement sent. NDA yet to be received. So looking at starting this work next week ish!
Phone enquiry for Dynamics Nav help which was the business I turned down. Requirement for 5 days a week on site support with configuration / development around jobs, resources and intercompany charging. Passed on a colleagues contact details for them to try.
Next week on client sites all week - bar Friday but that is a bank holiday! :)
So the Dynamics Nav market is hot hot hot!
On the accounts side, nearly all RTIs for payrolls for last tax year completed after checking to payments. New year payrolls created.
That's all for this week!

Friday 4 April 2014

Another week goes by but at least the sun is out today!

Another busy week for our Dynamics Nav services. Nav 2013 implementation project has now reached the stage of transaction data migration testing. Started with open customer and vendor ledger entries. Today I have tried copy and paste from excel directly to Nav and all good. Works well bar document type (will not accept blanks) and due date (nature of open items data migration means due date defined by legacy system, Nav by default calculates this using payment terms). But as long as the format of columns is ok, data pastes very well. Due to due date issue, had to use xml ports which I do not like. But all working bar a strange issue with the EURO sign which the client has included in account number. Will resolve this next week as it looks like a keyboard issue. Very strange.
Started to look at manufacturing module to get to grips with end to end process. Typical Nav in that it is functionality rich but driven by menu options with no short cut menus to speed up the process.
Had a phone call off a potential asking about training as he had just joined a business that uses Dynamics Nav. Quoted for work but will have to wait and see.
Spoke to a colleague from a few jobs ago who needed AX expertise. Provided some Nav related advice (similar but not the same set up and we do not support AX) and suggested a contact to get the best advice. So hopefully that will help.
Developments signed off and delivered this week - as usual!
Bar that pretty quiet on the new business / enquiries front.
On the accounts / tax side, quiet week. But tax year end tomorrow!

Friday 28 March 2014

The Dynamics Nav market definitely hotting up!

A very interesting week for Dynamics Nav new enquiries ranging from GL data migration for a year completed within a few days to a requirement for Dynamics Nav training for a person wanting to apply for Dynamics Nav jobs. Put in a quote for the former which confirmed conditions for completing the job within the timescale. Quote accepted but ETA for work not quick enough. Then they came back to get us to do the work with a new timescale. Signed NDA but still not doing the work. A very strange one in terms of requests we receive. Presume now 'dead in the water'.
We have had enquiries before for Dynamics Nav training for a person who wants to apply for jobs requiring Dynamics Nav experience. So first we cannot provide cost effective training for 1 person covering all the modules - we provide training to groups of users so the £600 per day we charge is cost effective per user. Better off with someone line firebrand where you pay a lot, take the exam and if you pass you get an accreditation. Second: being trained is NOT the same as experience. It is a huge ERP system so experience has to be gained from use.
Also attended a pre sales meeting with a potential client re configuring / migrating to Dynamics Nav from Sage. Provided plan and quote as requested but suspect day rates will put the client off. Sage and Dynamics Nav pricing very different.
On the chargeable work side of Dynamics Nav, work on Nav 2013 implementation moving on at a pace. Go live date agreed, all masters loaded and being approved. Transaction data migration started. So all good. A few development sign offs in the week - I think our clients are used to me being away 3 days a week. All delivered to spec and on time.
No activity on the accounts and payroll services side save the usual production of payslips. Tax year end looming but not really significant from a work perspective.
Warming up at last so may be the winter has had its last go?!?!?!
That's all folks.

Friday 21 March 2014

This week at Fraser Price Consulting

Another busy week.
For Dynamics Nav, a potential new client. Meeting next week in Daventry. Enquiry directly from google search and new web pages.
3 days on site on Nav 2013 implementation. Just issued new weekly project report to provide more structure for project tasks and to allow issues to be raised. Now in charge of steering meeting each Monday as well. More data migration and starting to use the Nav 2013 profile configurator which is brilliant! Tasks and assignment to resource agreed this week. Just updating project plan which will allow confirmation of go live date. So good progress.
Enquiry from current client re our resource available when new business acquired. So this may generate a lot of configuration / data migration / development work in the near future.
More developments signed off this week and already delivered for another client.
Passed on Nav 2013 report training enquiry to a colleague who will resource. Immediate need which we could not meet. Also change of approach for one of our clients re manufacturing module. We do not have the in depth expertise so going to bring in a colleague who is an expert.
Came across a slight bug this week - cannot undo ship as the sales order had been created with sequential line numbers with no gaps. Not standard Nav so not sure how this arose. Not really easy fix without writing some code to modify a posted table which is not recommended.
On the accounts side, for one client statutory accounts and corp tax return  submitted on line. The main focus in the next few weeks will be the close of year for the first year of RTIs. Hopefully very straight forward but we will have to wait and see.
So that's all for this week. Weather looks lovely so may be I will get to go outside for a break!

Friday 14 March 2014

A little earlier this week

Apologies for the lack of a blog last week. Good reason though - my 2nd grandson was born :). This week's blog is early as I am out at a client site from 11am today.
So what has been happening at FPC over the last 2 weeks? On Dynamics Nav, still busy on the on site Nav 2013 implementation with data migration work continuing. Less on site this week due to home issues but a lot of work completed getting business data ready for UAT and process gap testing. Also trying to agree final go live date.
We also completed a lot of development work for a new (more local) client this week with attendance on site today to deliver developments and provide some training. Back at the client next Friday as well.
Created an example Jet report for a client that was a free Jet report off the web modified to show what could be done / how the whole process works on Excel and Dynamics Nav. Provided free to client and now awaiting final report specs so can quote and then get on with work.
Some more development quotes approved by a client Wednesday and delivered late yesterday. Some late night working this week.
So for Dynamics Nav a busy week!
On the accounts services site, still providing weekly payroll services (I am the maternity cover) and trying to get some late statutory accounts completed and submitted. Should be done by next week. Bar that quite. But tax year end is approaching fast and the first tax year end on RTI for payroll is therefore looming. At least no submissions of p14s and p35s this year! :)
That's all for this week!

Just when you thought the week's could not get any busier!

What a week on the Dynamics Nav side of work.
3 days on site this week helping with a Dynamics Nav 2013 implementation. More progress made re master file data migration. Need to firm up the amended project plan so we can confirm the go live date. Discovered, as a Classic user, a map from Classic to RTC/Nav 2013 re keyboard short cuts. Available from our web site http://www.dynamicsnavukhelp.co.uk/nav-2013-hints-and-tips/.
So 2 days at the office this week and very busy. Not much chargeble but prospects looking good! Quite a few new enquiries and a PO confirmed from a new client. So a good week by any standards!
Also completed some developments for another client to enable the use of Dynamics Nav 2009 Classic by 3rd parties to create sales orders. Mix of development, roles and navigation pane configuration. Even found a way to stop Show All icon working. Seem to learn more each week when using Dynamics Nav.
Also had a client query re cue pages. So investigated and these are really simple to add to and make Dynamics Nav more user friendly on the role centre page by highlighting relevant issues. Watch this space.
Nearly ready for Jet report creation work for a client. Just waiting for final licence installation on remote desktop.
On the sales and marketing front, had a very useful call from Google re keywords, negative keywords and mobile ads. Changed the configuration as directed and then see what happens over the next week.
Also received an email from an existing client where there has been a change of personal. Looks like support needed re training etc. Again watch this space.
That's all for now!

What no rain?

Another busy week for the Dynamics Nav side of the business. 4 days on site at one client for the Dynamics Nav 2013 implementation. More master data files loaded with items (stock) following next week. Review of go live date not yet completed but all tasks included in project plan.
This week due to a frustrating time on finding a complete list of hot fixes for Nav 2013 (not R2), I have now added a complete (to Feb 2014) list of platform and application hot fixes on a new web page  http://www.dynamicsnavukhelp.co.uk/nav-2013-hot-fixes/. The application hot fixes are particularly of use given the bugs I have come across just from client queries. Especially the accounts schedule one where for total accounts the values in overview are invisible.
Also discovered the process for how Solution Centres apply these hot fixes. And also that all hot fixes are cumulative. Which for the application side makes sense.
Rescheduled on site visit at our FPC offices for another client for a week later due to the client commitments.
Investigated options for a potential client for bar code readers and Nav. Brilliant article at https://community.dynamics.com/nav/b/navguestcolumn/archive/2011/09/22/barcodes-magic-revealed-part-1.aspx for the bar code novices like us. Tested today and works as per the article. Yes only good for usb bar code scanners but works as an alternative key board. A little more research revealed that for bar code font 3 of 9 (don't ask!) you need to include a surrounding '*' to the field to ensure bar code reader reads the bar code. All interesting stuff I did not know before. Hopefully as a result of confirming this we will have a new customer. Fingers crossed.
Pretty quiet on the accounts, payroll and tax services side of the business. Emily on maternity leave from close of play today so I am now responsible for payrolls each week. Oh the joys! :)
So another busy week. All I need now is for clients to pay their invoices!

Friday 14 February 2014

Well there is wet and there is very wet!

On the Dynamics Nav front, another busy week. 4 days continuing to assist on Nav 2013 implementation. Making progress especially on a project plan and master file data migration. Then today was Jet  / super user training for a local client.
Some progress on other fronts with our current client base but no new enquiries and work required likely to be in the next 2 to 3 months.
Emily on maternity leave in a week so payroll and accounting services passes to me for her maternity leave.
That's all folks. Short blog today but only just got back into the office.

What a busy week....

What a busy week. 1st week at new contract job on client site helping with a Dynamics Nav 2013 R2 implementation which included review of project plans as well as providing help and assistance with the Dynamics Nav application. Helped migrate some customer masters. Just created 1st draft project plan using MS Project 2013 for review next week when I am on site. Amendments will follow once I have confirmed client resource to specific project tasks and resource specific work diaries. Quite impressed with MS Project 2013. More master file data migration to follow.
Found out 2 bits of information I did not know about 2013 R2. New features if you like. Profile amendments to page objects and quick start settings on pages. Both very useful for global user settings pre users making any of their own changes.
Other clients have been active as well. We have managed to remote access into a client database this week using VPN and a local Nav 2009 R2 SQL application. Next week we will load in object changes and make minor changes to the configuration.
Sent out a quote for a potential client following confirmation of requirements from an on site visit 2 weeks ago. No approval as yet. Quote included developments and on site training.

Providing on site Jet report training at the end of next week to a new client.
Heard back from a client that we provided a scoping document for a UK implementation on a v5 DE (German) database a few months ago. They have decided on Nav 2013 implementation instead and confirmed they will need support much later this year. So watch this space.
Quiet on the accounts, bookkeeping and tax (personal and corp) tax side at the moment following personal tax deadline passing without incident in FPC. Potential new client following meeting today.
So that's all for now folks. Not raining now at least. In fact I am pretty sure that bright thing in the sky is called the sun! :)

I think I prefer snow!

A busy week at Fraser Price Consulting on the Dynamics Nav side of the business.
We have received a number of phone calls requesting help. So the time spent recently on sales and marketing and web search optimisation has been well spent. Thanks to our expert (Jonathan) for his assistance.
A call received from an MD Monday resulted in a free on site visit Tuesday to discuss their requirements. There all day with a lot discussed. His main reason for calling us what lack of response from his Solution Centre. Awaiting confirmation of final requirements from the potential client at which point we can quote. If the quotes are acceptable we can get on with all the work. Plenty to have a go at and fix re configuration, developments and on site training.
Received a phone call today from a Dynamics Nav 5.0 SP1 user requesting assistance re vendor payment runs. Free support for now but as we quickly resolved 3 issues may be they will come back to us for paid support.
A recruitment agent rang this week as well and as a result I am on a 3 month (ish) on site Dynamics Nav 2013 support for a new client. Starts Monday on the South. Aiding the client to get the project back on track for go live and provide on site training. Thanks for Alex for this!
Some Dynamics Nav developments were signed off this week so we started these.
More work was completed on the web search optimisation and on lines ads. Now on Bing Ads as well as Google Ads so we will see what difference that makes. Also added more pages to our main web site re need to upgrade to Nav 2013 and landing pages for more adverts in LinkedIn, Google and Bing.
Very quiet on the accounts side even though the personal tax deadline for tax year ending 5/4/13 is today. But then all our clients' returns are in!
That's all for this week.

Rumours and gossip in the business world

Nearly fell off my chair this week. I have a call from a agency re Dynamics Nav project in Nottingham. That was a shock to start with. Then he confirms that he can get a project overseeing resource for £250 a day and can I beat that!?!? So I confirmed no I could not and that he should stop phoning around and get the person who will do the work for £250 placed with his client and quick.
But the good news from this is that Dynamics Nav take up in the East Midlands is on the up. About time!
Dynamics Nav work this week has been a little thin on the ground. Quite a few quotes have gone out for approval and feedback to date is good. But we will have to see what gets approved.
Created and sent a customer survey using PollDaddy. What a fantastic package. Very easy to use and if you want to know why your customers use your service, this is a great way of finding out. Kept the survey short and to the point and sent out yesterday to all current and old customers. So thanks to all customers who replied (50%) and for the content of the replies. Very useful as it confirmed we are still unique in speed of response, quality of delivery and price. Always good to confirm that.
We have set up a survey (not the same one) off our web pages http://www.dynamicsnavukhelp.co.uk/ and http://www.navisionconsultant.co.uk/ to find out how people got to our web page, what they were after and whether they found enough details on our web pages. Suspect this will be a slow take up but keeping our fingers crossed. I am now working on a survey to find out why we were unsuccessful in either quotes or promotions to businesses that are not customers. May need a thick skin for that one!
On the accounts / tax side, all our customer's tax returns are in before the deadline.

Friday 17 January 2014

A busy week!

I have spent most of this week getting to grips with sales and marketing to get more business. Quite an education. Sat with an expert for 2 days and as a result I have made a few changes to the web pages, google ads and Linkedin. Time will tell if the changes work.
Also this week as a direct result of these meetings we have announced to our Dynamics Nav customers this week a referral discount scheme worth a discount of 25% for both our customer and the referred customer on their first order and our customer's next order. A good deal so again time will tell. Best way for use to get new customers for the Dynamics Nav application.
Work wise for Dynamics Nav a busier week but still plenty of scope to cope with more work - as ever. Developments completed this week include a few reports. Developments started this week include a warehouse module enhancement to cope with lot inconsistencies between warehousing and stock. Still trying to resolve licence/ permissions issue for US business but hopefully remote desktop access will resolve this today.
On the accounts and tax side all personal tax returns in bar 1 before the deadline in 2 weeks. A result!!
Watch this space for more promotions and changes re the main Dynamics Nav service web site.

Have a great week end!

1st full week of the new year and what gives?

Obviously personal tax return deadline for tax year ending 5/4/13 3 weeks away. Just a handful of clients still outstanding but plenty of time.2 completed this week!
On the Dynamics Nav front, completed a report development for a client, delivered and then quoted for another report. Started a configuration / development for another client ready for review by client. Awaiting data from that client. So a drip feed of work not the expected torrent.
Nav 2013 project delayed for 2 months so started including updates on LinkedIn to find any contract work for 3 months. Trawled all the contacts and retail suffering. But I am hoping for potential contract work on Dynamics AX in the West Midlands and potentially non application specific contract work in the Midlands. Fingers crossed.
So a quiet start to the year. Not what we were hoping for at all. But at least we have had chargeable work. We have also had loads of non chargeable but that seems to occur more often these days!
Have a great week end all blog followers.

Friday 3 January 2014

Happy new year to all blog followers!

A new year. So what are the prospects for the new year? Heaven knows.
But on the accounts side, there is a personal tax deadline coming up at the end of this month. Half of our clients are already in so just the other half to chase etc.
On the Dynamics Nav side, I have already been at a client site providing on site support and had a quote approved for work to be completed next week. Just completed a development for another client re suggested stock allocation on open sales orders using the requested delivery date as the priority. And just before Xmas we completed some data migration for a client.
So a good start.

Hears to a prosperous new year! Fingers crossed! :)
