Just another day in a recession!!!

Success and failure today. RAID pc now working, booting into windows and backed up data for client as requested. Work quoted for yesterday that needed to be completed by next Tuesday (and it was 4 days work plus 1 day on site hanh holding) no longer required - client already has solution in place. Just been paid by a client for book keeping work.
So all in all a mixed day. Need to check fixed price support clients have paid by close of play tomorrow. And then raise new support invoices on 1st July.

Monday 28 June 2010

Client site visit today to quote for work. Quote submitted this afternoon for first line Dynamics Nav support (http://www.dynamicsnavconsultant.co.uk/support) together with a 1 page wonder detailing the service, pre requisites, costs and benefits. Also quoted for a specific development against user requirements.
This will be a tax return week for a number of clients. Bar that still quiet on the support desk. Are we really that good?

Forgot to mention that we have a client who has a RAID pc which is failing to boot into Windows 7. Initially fault was intermitent but now complete failure with missing operating system followed by non bootable disk. And the client does not have a current back up.
So the big question is how to recover data from RAID disks when you cannot get windows started. Completely outside our comfort zone here. So we are going to try and install an IDE disk as the primary disk, install fresh version of windows 7 and then hope (and pray) that windows recognises the RAID disks and we can then recover the client's data.
Another busy couple of days with clients making contact for work and potential work. Fingers crossed this leads to more. Conference call on DBXtra work and client will check work to date and confirm if ok. Job completed subject to any queries from the client. Completed a Dynamics Nav report enhancement for a client same day as requested so we can turn such requests around very quickly.
Purchased and downloaded on line personal tax filing software ready for client tax returns that need to be done in the next month - per client requests.
Balanced up PAYE/NHI control in FPC books to payment due in July.

So I have now looked at the key features of the budget and what do I conclude? Without seeing the nitty gritty and assuming that the East of England does not include the East Midlands, why won't we all create a new business and transfer everything to the new business so that we will not pay NHI? I am sure there will be a long list of exclusions and exceptions in the nitty gritty!!
And they are reducing the rate of Corp tax but NOT small companies rate. So to generate wealth takes lots of new small businesses but no tax breaks for them! Irish!! Unless of course this is the NHI freeby! But why should I create a new business to do this!
And who has kept the economy going during the recession? The only people whose income has remained constant - those receiving benefits. So tackling the benefits system may not help the recovery.

Just the ramblings of a business owner who has yet to feel better off from 4 decades of budgets!
No blog for a few days and another early one! Like buses! Today is all about the budget - how they (the government) have been managing expectations re bad news and how I suspect that it will not be as bad as they say! But then again I could be wrong. I am keeping my fingers crossed that client inactivity is down to the combination of an election and this budget. I am hoping that business may be more forthcoming after today but I am not holding my breath!
Had a meeting with my bank relationship manager yesterday. I have banked with Lloyds TSB since the business started in 2003 and this is the first time I have met one! But then again we run a tight and very simpleship re bankings. Offered me a new tariff which would save about £2 a month. So not changing tarriff.
Work at the moment is mainly on client management accounts and year end accounts. No Nav work at the minute but there is some fixed price support work. 2 simple requests which will complete as part of the fixed price support so there is no additional charge to the client. That is after all what they pay for!!
Ironically, changing the VAT rate may bring in some support work for clients - fully configurable in Dynamics Nav via VAT Prod Posting Groups and assigning defaults to GLs, items, resources etc.

More work on DBXtra queries. Some links to other legacy system master files to be confirmed but all done bar that. Spent more time on internal admin now that Emily has gone on maternity leave including processing our payroll. Client payrolls are next week.
Need to confirm

Wednesday 16 June 2010

An early blog today. 2 bits of work delivered to clients and so awaiting feedback before I can go any further.

The Dynamics Nav matched bank rec data load utility developed needed tweaking for maximum number of rows (me being thick!) and document types. Then it loaded fine and is now posting. As 30k lines have been loaded, this is taking a while. Hopefully client will be happy as doing this manually would be a nightmare.

So today is a web page update day. Created a new DBXtra support web page to go with the domain purchased (www.dbxtrahelp.co.uk). Brief at the minute but it does get some web presence at least. A start as they say.
Added these blogs (there are 3 at the moment) to a number of the domains today and I am just amending the main FPC web page to include the blogs and look better! It has been a while since this web page was updated.

Once that is done, I will sit here waiting for client response.

Tuesday 15 June 2010

Slight delay to work this week - all day with youngest daughter at hospital. All ok though so that's great!
Emily has now left and is on maternity leave until mid Nov. She will be sorely missed but all at FPC wish her well and good luck with the imminent birth. Especially the prospective grandad. Feeling old!!
Work wise I have been focusing on catch up from yesterday in terms of a clients set of accounts for the last tax year, DBXtra query for a PO list and Dynamics Nav support for a development (www.dynamicsnavreports.co.uk) delivered to a client recently on loading matched bank rec items via Excel. The latter was a simple issue in the end - down to a simple coding error re row numbers etc.
So a busy day again!
Dynamics Nav support (first line) desk (www.dynamicsnavconsultant.co.uk/support) slightly busier but still very quiet given previous activity.Tomorrow will be amending the PO list query via DBXtra for client comment and continued support for matched bank rec data loads.

Friday 11 June 2010

A busy couple of days - hence no blogg yesterday! Ongoing work on the DBXtra for a client with a steep learning curve for me. But I am getting somewhere. Issue is that I am 'blind' to the actual data so I cannot cross check results from a DBXtra query.

Also been working on clients year end books for the tax year end 2010. This work has been brought forward from the usual work slot as Emily is off on maternity leave from next Tuesday. Completed a VAT return for 1 client.

Had a number of enquiries over the last 2 weeks for MS Office Accounting (2008) support (including configuration, training and support) and MS Office 2007 training. Awaiting to hear from both after confirming effort and costs.

Still waiting to hear from a number of clients on Dynamics Nav development sign offs. We could be very busy if this work is signed off. Fingers crossed for next week.

Update for 09/6/2010

Today has been a day of getting to grips with an independent query tool (DBXtra) for a client on their legacy database. Has the look and feel of Access in how you create the query and links. Requires some knowledge of the legacy database which I do not have but I am learning.
Also nearly completed some management accounts for a client after receiving the bank statements and supporting invoices this morning. 1 query and then we can publish. Then do the VAT return for them and start the year end process.
So a busy day. Also started a web page for the DBXtra support based on information that is useful and I only found via searching the web. Will see if I can get a suitable domain for the pages, complete the pages and publish. We do our own web page design and updates via KompoZer. A simple tool with good and bad features but it does allow web search optimisation.

Well guess what I found!

I have been trying to set up a business blog for a while. First attempt was via the FPC domain supplier - 1and1. But this seem to encourage loads of spam mail! We originally had 3 forums - 1 for each of 3 domains.
So I was today trying to set up a Twitter link off our www.dynamicsnavconsultant.co.uk when I discovered a blog off google! We also use Google Adwords as part of our advertising / marketing campaigns.

Anyway we now have a blog and link to our recent twitter account. Success. We will now start to use the blog and twitter to see if anyone needs our services and give an insight into what we do each day.
